  • Apple issues iOS 13.2.1 update for HomePod following bricking problems

Before I jump in and update to 13.2.1 from 12.4, may I ask if those who have successfully updated has any 3rd party HomeKit devices (e.g. Philips Hue, Eve) as part of the Home ecosystem?

Thanks alot. Just want to assess the risk since HomePod did not launch here and I had to import it from nearest country where it has launched.
Ecobee 4 with 3 satellite sensors, several different kinds of Phillips Hue lights spread over 4 rooms, August smart lock, D-LInk Omna security camera. Several instances of automations being triggered at the wrong time in the hours following the 13.2 update, but none since updating to 13.2.1. In any event, 'm not sure that these were the fault of the HomePod software, as my Apple TV is acting as the HomeKit hub, with the HomePods only deployed as standbys. Otherwise no issues. HomeKit targeted Siri commands have so far been processed by the HomePods without error.

Okay, I'll be the boring person. I was on of those idiots who was actually able to install 3.2 on my, stereo pair of HomePods, but it took forever, and AirPlay 2 was totally borked after the update. Today, 3.2.1 installed without incident in a reasonable amount of time on the same HomePods, and AirPlay 2 now works more or less as advertised, as does Handoff, and as many of the other advertised new features as I've been able to test. (I live alone, so no multiple voice recognition tests until family comes for a visit.)

So okay, Apple, peace. But maybe next time you'll remember this Catalina/iOs/iPadOS/HomePod mess and either stagger your hardware/software releases, reorganize Federighi's division, or something -- anything -- to save your customers from going through this again. Your software isn't running exclusively on hobbies or toys, or occasionally used geek devices as it once did. Quite simply, these i-things and Mac-things and Apple-things are like electricity or municipal water supplies. They're how we live. If you want to rule our world, Tim, you gotta do better than this....

  • macOS Catalina 10.15.1 is now available with opt-in Siri review, support for AirPods Pro

I have the exact same Internet issue on my MacBook Pro 2018 after updating it to MacOS Catalina 10.15.1!

I may a solution for you.  If you are running Intego Netbarrier go to the Netbarrier preferences and turn it off.  That worked on my iMac Pro, and my wife's iMac.  I had tried safe mode but that didn't make any difference I'm not sure why.  Something got changed via the update, now I'll have to wait until there is a fix either from Apple or Intego before I turn it back on.  Shame on me for all my bad thoughts.

Bless you, Mr. Mike, bless you. I DO have Intego, and turning it off DOES work. Weird, 'cause I thought I'd tried this yesterday, but apparently not. I hate going naked on the Internet, although I'm not really -- I've still got Eero's firewall and Apple's, and Little Snitch -- but knowing Intego, they'll be issuing a fix sooner rather than later. (If only you'd been quicker on the trigger, I could have saved myself a 40 minute OS re-install, but hey, I'm still awfully grateful. :-) )

  • If you updated your HomePod to 13.2, do not reset it or remove it from the Home app

My 3.2 update for two stereo-paired HomePods finished successfully, although the Home App hung on installing. (I let the app run for an hour without interrupting it, long past the time when the update-in-progress lights went out on the two HomePods. When I finally did give up, and resorted to force quitting and restarting the Home app on my iPhone, it did indicate that the 3.2 update had in fact been completed.)

The problem now is that AirPlay is COMPLETELY borked. The only way my two HomePods will play as a stereo pair is if I start an Apple Music stream directly from them. AirPlay results in one speaker only playing, although both show the lit-up plus and minus signs. If I tap on the dead one to try to encourage it to play, the plus and minus lights go out. If I tap it again, it starts paying something else from my library, and the other speaker shuts off. Meanwhile, the AirPlay source, whether it's a Mac or iOS device, keeps playing the original selection. THEN a message pops up on the source warning that I'm streaming to two devices, and asks if I'd like to upgrade to a family plan!

Tell you what. AirPlay 2 has NEVER worked right for me, and all my Apple devices -- iMac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch -- are the latest versions, and have been running the latest software updates throughout this agonizing Catalina/iOS 13/iPadOS 13 putz-with-it-till-it-sort-of-works update cycle. This latest screw-up, though, is absolutely crazy-making. It seems as though every time Apple issues a software update these days, more stuff that WAS working quits working, and it's half a year and several updates more before things go back to working -- sometimes -- as well as they were working before the update. At this point, I feel like mailing both my HomePods back to Tim Cook, and telling him where to stick them (And no, that wouldn't be on the ever growing pile of refurb candidates.)

  • Apple just released iPadOS 13.1 - here's what features to look for

I managed to fix the problem outlined in my earlier post (notes not syncing between my iPad and iPhone) by toggling the iCloud sync on both devices off and then on again.

Shortly thereafter, though, another bug popped up on my iPhone. The lock sound stopped working. I fixed that, at least temporarily, by rebooting the phone.

Needless to say, I'm not at all happy with these iOS 13 adventures. It looks as though we'll be beta-testing this supposedly stable release well into the Spring. What can I say? My relatively bug-free experience with iOS 12 apparently lulled me into a false sense of security. Note to self: OS releases that have a lot of new features also have a lot of new bugs. Get over it.
