Trump's 25% smartphone tariff starts just in time for the iPhone 17

President Trump has revealed that his proposed 25% tariffs on all smartphones coming into the U.S. will take effect in June 2025, well before a single iPhone 17 will ship.

Two men in suits sit at a table, engaged in conversation, with an elegant, ornately decorated background.
President Trump says a 25% smartphone tariff will come into effect by the end of June 2025.

Earlier on Friday, Trump announced that there will be a penalty if Apple does not move manufacturing to the United States. Now, his latest statements serve to clarify that other smartphone manufacturers will be affected, and the President revealed exactly when the new tariffs will be imposed.

According to President Trump, the 25% smartphone will impact not only Apple, but every other manufacturer that imports to the US, in the interest of fairness. The tariffs are scheduled to take effect by the end of June, said Trump.

"When they build their plant here, there's no tariff," said the President. "So, they're going to be building plants there, but I had an understanding with Tim [Cook] that he wouldn't be doing this."

"He said he's going to go to India to build plants." Trump commented that it was "okay to go to India, but you're not going to sell into here without tariffs."

Apple's shift in manufacturing to India began during the first Trump administration.

Trump says he's going to tariff all smartphones: "It would be also Samsung and anybody that makes that product, otherwise it wouldn't be fair. So anybody that makes that product. And that'll start on I guess the end of June ... when they build the plant here there's no tariff."

During President Trump's first term in office, Apple was able to secure a tariff exemption, likely as a result of Tim Cook's negotiating skills. Cook has an established strategy for dealing with President Trump, where their conversations revolve around a singular issue important to Apple.

The company was even able to secure another tariff exemption in April 2025, but it appears as though it will be short-lived.

Even without President Trump's latest plans for a 25% smartphone tariff, there's currently an ongoing investigation into the national security implications of semiconductor manufacture, which is expected to conclude with a further tariff.

President Trump believes that iPhone manufacturing can move to the United States, even though the country presently lacks the necessary resources, facilities, and low-cost skilled labor required for such an endeavor. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick made an equally bizarre claim that Apple just needs robot arms for U.S. iPhone manufacturing to become a reality.

However, iPhone chip-maker TSMC's US manufacturing efforts are a whole five years behind its Taiwan operations, indicating that the latest Apple chips likely won't be made in the United States for the foreseeable future. Probably close to a decade.

During Apple's last earnings on May 1, CEO Tim Cook revealed that Apple expected to spend $900 million in its June quarter, solely on efforts to minimize the impact of Trump's tariffs. The estimate was made under the assumption that there would be no tariff-related changes, so that number will likely be higher because of Trump's 25% tariffs on smartphone imports.

Apple, understandably, wanted to keep its manufacturing costs and tariff-related expenses as low as possible, so it decided to increase iPhone production in India. Tim Cook revealed that nearly half of iPhones sold in the U.S. during the second quarter of 2025 came from India.

This made sense given that China was dealt a 145% tariff, which was massive compared to the 26% tariff for imports from India. In April 2025, Apple began increasing product imports from India in an attempt to avoid tariff-related iPhone price increases.

Consumers were already panic-buying devices, so Apple wanted to maintain iPhone prices through short-term stockpiling. That was all before President Trump's latest tariff, though.

With the iPhone 17, Apple won't be able to apply the same strategy. The company will now face a 25% tariff regardless of where its devices are produced. Mass production typically begins in July or August of every year, so Apple doesn't have any iPhone 17 units stockpiled, either.

This ultimately means that we could see a price increase in 2025, though it might be different than previous predictions.

No, but it got him his ear, but there was never going to be a guarantee of a good response, but it was probably an inexpensive way of trying - what else could be done.

Moving Apple production to America would be unbelievably expensive and never happen in Trumps lifetime assuming it was even possible.

Go ahead, apply the tariffs. It would be very unpopular. Paying more for your Apple products, blame Trump. Boycott his hotels. Pickett the White House. Complain to your Republican representatives. Apple losing market share...blame Trump.

Why is Trump hammering everyone with tariffs? Perhaps partly because he's almost 80 and he wants to be worshipped now, he doesn't have later.

What would Trump do as President if he didn't have the tariff hammer? He wasn't in anything close politics before the Presidency. He doesn't care about societal or environmental issues. It's not why he became President. Without tariffs, all he has is expensive gifts...bitcoins...making deals to open hotels and golf courses around the world....

In less than a week, Apple has proved to be extremely vulnerable.

Its supply chain is under attack by tariff's.
Its flagship product is under attack by its former star employee.
Its AI is nowhere to be found.

Apple is under enormous pressure and let's see how M. Cook can address it.

A 25% tariff is actually the tariff rate since 2019 imposed by Trump.

And you wonder why everything costs so much since then????

Finally, I would add that despite what he said on social media, if Trump follows thru on this threat against Apple, I would be shocked if it wasn't implemented as a tax on smartphones (perhaps phones costing more than $300) rather than iPhones specifically. (The dude LOVES tariffs after all.) I have no reason to believe this would benefit Samsung. (Unless South Korea gives him a superyacht or something, of course.)

Ironically, I wrote this post thinking I was responding to the earlier thread. I hadn't seen this update. So yeah, I was right. heh.

I'm going to so be pissed and relieved when, in the near future, Trump "suspends" this one and the price of AAPL surges back. Pissed because the profit all his insider-trader cronies will make; relieved because I have so much invested in AAPL.

I wish I were so confident that his corruption outweighs his idiocy that I could afford to put my money where my mouth is (by acting like an insider trader knowing he's going to orchestrate a market boost for AAPL soon). Instead I'm just going to keep holding on and ride out the Trump chaos.

That was just a token. Trump is going to extort a lot more out of Apple before he is done and he is basically free to vandalize the whole country.

s sense. If cook said he was going to build at home snd thrn got some exemptions, but then gave indication of going back on his word, then the tarriffs would factor again.

Pretty sure if cook committee to doing SOMETHING in the usa soon, there would be no tarriffs.

Apple has escaped so far. And now they’re in tje hot seat. Hopefully they make the right decision and do something back home.

It’s a tough spot. But it’s also important to make the hard decisions today in order to secure a brighter tomorrow.

Lol. iPhone pro max was 1099 in 2019. 1199 in 2024 under Biden.

Gas was 4.13in California state average in 2019. 4.87 in 2024.

The ford mustang GT was 35335 in 2019. 42495 in 2024.

Eggs were 1.46 a dozen. In 2024 that went to 4.15 under Biden.

    Trump just got here.

Let him fight the hood fight to get things back on track. Apple building st home is s good thing. Free and fair trade is s good thing. The USA has been tariffed to desth. It’s about time America recoups some of that until those same countries drop their tarriffs. Any American company building up hostile nations by giving them huge investments and building their economies instead of their homeland should be ashamed.

It's time of Tim to stop messing around, take the gloves off and start using Corporate Funds to hit back.
He only gets the message when people stop appeasing him.

Show some leadership, get other business leaders on board.

Inside every box and in every ad, inside every store the message should be

"President Trump is changing you, the American consumer 25% tax. This tax is paid by you, not Apple, not India, not China, not by any other country. President Trump is taxing you."

When you follow up “Makes sense” with complete speculation on why said thing makes sense, then it really doesn’t make sense. You wouldn’t have to dive headfirst into fictional speculation if it made sense. If it made sense it would be self evident. That people just make things up to protect their worship of a person is how we know it’s a cult.

Oh no what would one of the richest most profile companies in the world do? How about stop using cheaper labor and move manufacturing back to the country that buys 40% of your products and oh wait makes 12% less profits..   I don't know how people are not pressuring companies like Apple to focus on the people instead of the profits.. I blame the Stockmarket. I t made us forget why we do what we do.
