Older macOS & iPadOS versions got security updates too
Apple released new security updates Monday for macOS Ventura, macOS Sonoma, and iPadOS 17, continuing its support for older devices with critical patches aimed at resolving vulnerabilities.

The updates -- macOS Ventura 13.7.6 (22H625), macOS Sonoma 14.7.6 (23H626), and iPadOS 17.7.7 -- rolled out on May 12. While newer devices have already moved on to macOS Sequoia and iPadOS 18, these updates focus on users still running earlier versions due to hardware compatibility or enterprise support policies.
Apple's macOS Ventura remains available for Intel Macs such as the 2017 iMac and 2018 Mac mini, while Sonoma supports a broader range of Apple Silicon devices in addition to late-model Intel systems. The iPadOS 17.7.7 update is available for devices like the iPad Pro 12.9-inch 2nd generation, iPad Pro 10.5-inch, and iPad 6th generation.
According to Apple's security updates page, the May 12 patches address vulnerabilities across several components. Apple has not reported any of the fixed bugs as being actively exploited. When threats are known to be in the wild, Apple explicitly flags them, and no such notes appear in this release.
How to update and stay protected
Users can install these updates by navigating to System Settings > General > Software Update on their Mac or iPad. The device must be connected to Wi-Fi and either charging or above a 50 percent battery level to complete the process.
To stay protected between system updates, Apple recommends avoiding suspicious links, installing all App Store updates, and enabling features like Gatekeeper and system integrity protection. Advanced users or those in high-risk environments may also consider activating Lockdown Mode and restricting JavaScript execution in Safari.
Strong passcodes, secure Wi-Fi usage, and two-factor authentication for Apple ID accounts can help further reduce risk exposure.
